The Other Side of Self-Publishing

I’ve groaned a few times in the past about the increasing power of media giants like Amazon, and the way they appear to be trying to completely dominate all links in the publishing chain. Here is a short article about the beneficial effects of self-publishing for some authors. I still do not think that self publishing is a viable way to support one’s self, but if the returns on a popular author’s works are so high, maybe a few of them can make a go of it.

For a little historical perspective, here is an article by Charles Stross that lays out the problem. It’s probably a little dated already, but I think the central dispute remains unchanged.
