   It’s been several years since I read the book, but if memory serves he is burning the messages from Reverend Kreditor to protect himself. Friendly is fleeing from the authorities who no doubt want to prosecute him for war crimes he committed while he worked with Dr. Mengele and in Auschwitz. Kreditor is a Nazi sympathizer in New York who sends Friendly occasional messages telling him whether or not the authorities are on to him. Most of the messages say nice things, such as the weather here is still pleasant in NYC. I think those are coded messages telling Friendly that the authorities do not know where he is or what his alias is. If Kreditor thought that the war crimes tribunals knew where Friendly was and were coming for him, he would probably tell Friendly in a letter that things were very stormy in NYC. And of course Friendly burns them after reading them, because they are evidence that he and Kreditor are in a criminal plot to hide Friendly from the authorities.

   I recalled another story that played with the backwards-in-time notion really well, called The Man Who Walked Home, by James Tiptree, Jr. An amazing story.
