Y: The Last Man, by Vaughan, Brian

What can I say about Y: The Last Man that has not been said innumerable times before? Nothing probalby, if I choose to focus on the positive. Since I don’t see that much about this series to be positive about, I should be able to fill a few pages here. Recently – against my better judgment – I completed the entire run of the collected series of this comic.

A boy and his monkey, with a bondage subtext. That about sums it up.

I stopped reading the single issues part way into volume four. It never lived up to its premise sadly. There were moments of hope but over all it felt like an incomplete idea rushed into production.

Fables on the other hand more than lives up to its hype.

Fables is written by Bill Willingham. It is about the various Fairy Tale creatures, Snow White, Little Boy Blue, etc fled the land of Fable to escape from a powerful enemy and now inhabit our world. It’s very grown up and mature, not dumb and gratuitous.

Glad to hear what you said about this one, Rob. Personally I am sick of hearing how fantastic this series is. I saw a few moments of brilliance, especially in volume 10, but over all I thought it was pretty ridiculous. I almost think that if they had taken themselves a bit more seriously it would have been great.

I also like warren Ellis’ Transmetropolitan. Hugely influenced by Spinrad’s Bug Jack Barron.

Matt Wagner’s Grendel series is also good. Lot’s of myth making and symbolism through out.

Queen & Country by Greg Rucka is an excellent espionage series.

Astronaut’s in Trouble by Larry Young were a lot of fun.

In fact check out a lot of the offerings from Ait/ Planet Lar, I have a bunch of their collections, lots of good stuff in different genres.

Then all but Queen & Country fits the bill. I am also a big fan of Preacher. Not SF, but when one of the the characters is named arseface and is fully developed, not to mention the Saint of Killers, I had to read it. great stuff.

I agree. Im halfway through Preacher and had to take a break. Plus, those books are pretty damn expensive. I think I have read 6 of them and paid $25 a pop so far.
