2011 Hugo Awards

The first step in deciding who the winners of the 2011 Hugo Awards (as well as the John W. Campbell Award for the best new author) has taken place. Here you can find information about the preminiary ballot. Basically convention members from this year’s con in Reno, Nevada (more precisely, those who have already forked over the price of a ticket), and last year’s con in Australia may participate. The ballot is open to any nomination. After March 26, when the preliminary step is done, the final ballot will present those who garnered sufficient nominations for a final vote by Renovation (Reno convention, 2011) members only. I have not yet bought my tickets to the Worldcon in Reno, and don’t care too much about this preliminary process, so I wont be voting now.

A small correction: it is not just attendees who are allowed to nominate and vote, it’s all members of the convention.

What’s the difference you may ask. Simply put, it’s possible to become a supporting member. A supporting membership costs less and gives you all the rights of an attending membership, except the right to attend (you can always upgrade if you change your mind about going). Basically it’s made for those people who can’t attend but want their voices heard in the Hugo nominating and voting process.
