The first time I ever read anything by Brian Aldiss I was in London. I was there for an extended "escape the States" vacation that actually turned into a working vacation coupled with as much hoboing as I could fit in. I read this a few months back and my opinion isn’t too far off from your own. I think it was a fair end-of-the-world story with a convincing level of depressing drabness, but Aldiss never seems to get beyond “fair” for me. There’s just something uninspiring about his writing, something that keeps his novels below the realm of greatness. I do agree about the little bits of brilliant prose here and there, though.

I still really wish that BJ would come back and explain what he thinks I missed. It’s obvious that I am not a great fan of this book, but I do like discussing it because it generates some pretty diverse opinions.
