Fledgling, by Butler, Octavia

About two-and-a-half years ago the world lost one of the most interesting and original voices in SF. Octavia E. Butler slipped while walking out of her Seattle, Washington home, struck her head on a hard surface, and passed away shortly thereafter. It was a very sad day.
